September 19, 2006 (Salzburg, Austria) — The Elite Women’s Time Trial is the first event that kicks off the racing at the 2006 Salzburg Road World Championships tomorrow at 12 noon local time (6:00 am EDT) on a 26.12 kilometer course. The U23 Men follow at 2:00 pm (8:00 am EDT) on a 39.54 kilometer route. The Elite Men’s TT will be held on Thursday at 1:30 pm local, (7:30 am EDT) on a 50.83 kilometer course.

Representing Canada in the Elite Women’s TT are Alex Wrubleski (SK) and Anne Samplonius (QC); U23 Men TT are David Veilleux (QC) and Brad Fairall (BC); Elite Men TT are Ryder Hesjedal (BC) and Svein Tuft (BC).

Pre Race Notes

– Organisation for the Salzburg road world championships has so far been impressively managed, but on the eve of the first day of racing, things haven’t entirely gone to plan.

In a rare display of Austrian innefficiency, ASFINAG, the company that runs the road network, has just decided to begin roadwork on the main A10 motorway into Salzburg from the South. Traffic is occasionally being redirected into the Pass Lueg, a winding road through a narrow gorge.

Normally in such circumstances only minor delays are experienced but with an expected 50,000 Italian fans making their way to to the city along this road by the weekend, the Pass Lueg could turn into something like a traffic nightmare usually only found in the centre of Rome on a Friday evening.

– Also not doing its bit is the weather. Tuesday’s official training ride around the time trial course was attended by more police and journalists than riders. But at least Belgian Leif Hoste (Discovery Channel) as well as a few keen looking Italians turned up with a couple of dozen others for a soggy outing, some of whom had fitted clip-on plastic mudguards to their $20,000 dollar time trial machines.

Unfortunately rain also put a slight damper on the opening ceremony which kicked off today, Tuesday evening. Thankfully the situation is predicted to improve and fine weather will, fingers crossed, bless the event over the next five days.
