July 10, 2004 – Ron Marat was a national fixture in track cycling in Victoria, Calgary and Winnipeg. He was both a regular race participant and a dedicated volunteer for a good part of his life. He was a dedicated volunteer for the 1967 Pan-Am in Winnipeg; the 1974 World Cycling Championships in Montreal; the 1976 Olympics in Montreal; the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton; the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, plus just about every Track nationals held from the 70’s to the 90’s . A move to Victoria followed retirement in 1994 where he continued to race, ride, help out at the track and work one or two days a week at Black Cat Bicycles.

One of his big wishes was to ride the track at age 75. Sadly, Ron passed away at the age of 74. Upon his passing, he left behind a legacy of a thriving track community and a tradition of support and dedication to amateur sport.
