March 26, 2003 – Roland Green was named Senior Male Athlete of the Year on March 13th at the 37th Annual Sport BC Athlete of the Year Awards, beating out fellow Victoria resident Simon Whitfield (Triathlon) and Vancouver-based swimmer Mike Mintenko. The 29 year-old Victoria native received the award after completing an outstanding season that included back-to-back World Championship titles and a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.

In 1990, Roland Green started to compete in mountain bike races near his home in Victoria, British Columbia. Eventually, Green tried a friend's road bike, and began to road race. After a brief gestation period, he quickly established himself among the best young cyclists in the world, going on to win the prestigious Tour de L'Abitibi in 1992.

In 1996, Green's attention returned to mountain biking, again establishing himself as an up-and-coming star, finishing 4th in the Under-23 World Championships, despite a flat tire earlier in the race.

Green made his breakthrough in 2000, where his tenacity and hard training had paid off, becoming Canada's first male World Cup medalist and placing second at the World Championships.

In 2001, Green pulled out all the stops, and, win-after-win, clinched the Canadian National Championship, the NORBA long and short-track XC titles and took the UCI World Cup title! Not content with his streak of victories, Roland went on to became the first North American since 1994, and the first Canadian man to be crowned with the World Championship title. Later that same year, Roland competed at the World Road Championships, as a member of the venerable US Postal Service, alongside four-time Tour de France champion, Lance Armstrong.

So what does the man who won it all in 2001 do for an encore? Win it all again of course! Continuing his crushing domination, Roland went on to capture the 2002 NORBA Cup Championship, the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, and finally, Roland did what only one other male mountain biker has done since 1990 – win his second consecutive World Championship title!

Continuing with his winning streak into the 2003 season, Roland, teaming up with fellow BC riders Cory Lange and Ryder Hesjedal, won the King of the Mountains title in the Tour de Lankawi. “Onwards and upwards” as they say.
