April 2, 2003 (Redlands, CA) – On March 25, 2003, the Spirit of Sport Foundation announced the winners of the 30th Annual Canadian Sport Awards. Once again, Canada's Roland Green won Male Athlete of the Year. Pedal tracked down Green at the Redlands Classic in California, to get his comments on what it means to win an award that represents all sports, not just cycling.

“It feels like I have contributed to the credibility of our sport and hopefully made cycling more popular with sports fans.” Unable to be at the Awards presentation in person, Green's good friend and fellow Victoria B.C. resident, Simon Ibell accepted the award on his behalf.

Green reflected on winning the award for the second year in a row. “I feel like I'm doing my job and getting recognized at the same time. I was a bit upset that I didn't get to meet Wayne Gretzky but heard he wasn't there after all. Now he must be a busy guy!”

The current World MTB Champion is just getting warmed up for the 2003 season. Surprised at his 4th place overall at the Tour of Langkawi, an international road race held in February in Malaysia, Green is optimistic about this upcoming season of racing.

“Winter training was very average. We had average weather, average mileage, felt average and I feel pretty average right now. This will be good for later in the season, as I will spend a lot of energy in the latter part of the season. I am really looking forward to the support from all Canadian fans at the 2003 Hamilton Road Worlds. My good fried Cliff Kennel will be there watching. This guy is the most energetic cycling fan I know. I wouldn't be surprised if he painted his body in maple leafs!”

Green's biggest goal of the year is the World MTB Championships. Following that, he hopes to have a personal best in the time trial at the Hamilton 2003 World Road Championships in October.
