May 11, 2019 (Bologna, Ita) – Primoz Roglic (Slo) Team Jumbo-Visma claimed the pink jersey with an impressive victory on the opening stage of the Giro d Italia winning the 8 km ITT in Bologna in 12:54. The time trial featured a renowned gruelling 9.7% climb up San Luca to the finish.

In the hot seat for over three hours Roglic was the only rider under 13 minutes as Simon Yates (Gbr) Mitchelton-Scott, who set out three hours later finished second at 19 seconds behind with Vincenzo Nibali (Ita) Bahrain-Merida another four seconds in arrears.

Threat of thunderstorms saw top contenders start early with Tom Dumoulin (Ned) Team Sunweb, the 2017 Giro winner, first off the ramp to finish 5th overall. The lone Canadian at the first grand tour of the season, Guillaume Boivin (Can) Israel Cycling Academy, finished 137th.

“I am super happy. It’s an amazing feeling that I’ve won and that I’ll start in the pink jersey tomorrow,” said Roglic who raced a Bianchi Aquila CV time trial bike engineered with the company’s CV system powered by Countervail. “I didn’t have any tactics. I started fast and tried to keep my pace on the climb. This is a great start, but I’m aware that the happiest man on earth will be the man who’ll wear the jersey in Verona. There’s a long way to go, but we started very well. I’m looking forward to the upcoming three weeks.”
