December 31, 2007 – Spain’s Roberto Heras announced his retirement after his two-year ban for doping ended in October, according to AP. Under the UCI’s code of ethics, a rider who has been sanctioned for doping may not join a ProTour team for two more years after serving his ban. Heras is frustrated by this rule, as he only wants to ride with a ProTour team.
The 33-year-old former Liberty Seguros rider won the Tour of Spain three times and was stripped of his fourth win after testing positive for EPO in 2005. Despite the UCI ruling against him, Heras denied using performance enhancing drugs.
