March 20, 2009 (Seattle, WA) – The Ride to Conquer Cancer has now become an international cycling event. Canary Foundation and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington have joined the BC Cancer Foundation as co-beneficiaries of the first large-scale cycling fundraiser to cross the 49th parallel and benefit cancer research in both Canada and the U.S.
The Ride to Conquer Cancer will raise funds for research and enhancements to patient care in British Columbia and Washington. Net proceeds of funds raised by U.S. riders will be donated to the Canary Foundation to support early detection cancer research at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.
“We are very pleased that Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center will be a beneficiary of The Ride to Conquer Cancer,” says Nancy Wells, Vice President of Development at the Hutchinson Center. “It is a bold event with a bold aim. We encourage all Washingtonians to take part in this life-changing journey.”
Since one in three people will develop cancer in his or her lifetime, this event is rightly viewed as a call to action. By crossing borders on bikes, participants will generate funds that can lead to significant breakthroughs in research, treatment and care.
“Far too many people, from all walks of life are afflicted with this disease,” says Don Listwin, founder of Canary Foundation. “I know that some people may think this is a challenging event. It’s meant to be! But it is nothing compared to the challenges that those who experience cancer face. Together we can make a difference!”
The Ride begins with Opening Ceremonies the morning of Saturday, June 20, 2009 in Vancouver before riders start the first leg of the course. After camping overnight, the riders will finish their voyage on Sunday afternoon in Seattle.
