November 24, 2004 – The Redlands Bicycle Classic announced major changes in key personnel for 2005. Bob Peppler, a ten-year board member and Corporate President will take over as Race Director; Brian King, an eight-year member will become the Assistant Race Director; Lisa Thouas, takes over as Director of Marketing; and Mark and Maryann Stanson move from the number two spot in Sponsorship to the lead. The Redlands Bicycle Classic is an all-volunteer organization, including its directors.
Carole Beswick, one of the race founders and former Director of Sponsorship and Craig Kundig, an original committee member and former Race Director have retired from the board, but will both stay on as consultants. James Reed, former Race Director for the last five years has resigned. All three cite work, family and other obligations as the reason for the change.
“With an established 20 year tradition, I feel I can become more of a spectator and less of a participant,” Beswick commented. “I will continue to do whatever I can to help fund this event into the future.”
Craig Kundig, who became the Race Director in ’92, became more active and steered the race towards International status. Kundig became the Director of Marketing for the event five years ago and long time assistant, James Reed, took over the technical side and assumed the responsibility of Race Director.
“I still plan to be involved in the event,” said Kundig. “I have made it known that I am available to Bob, Brian and Lisa, as well as answer any questions to make the transition smooth. After 20 years of Classics and the US Olympic qualifying event I feel it is time for someone else to take the lead.”
The Redlands Bicycle Classic will be over four days in 2005, March 31 through April 3. The Union Cyclist Internationale will again sanction this event.
