March 2, 2006 — Anticipation is building for the first-ever Red Bull Crashed Ice in Canada. Amidst the buzz, the unique ice-cross downhill sport is assuming an ever-evolving DNA — luge-like course, snowboardcross format, downhill skier crouch, hockey-player mentality.
On March 4, at 7:30 p.m., the action begins when four hockey-equipped skaters launch through the starting gates of Red Bull Crashed Ice and hurtle down a 400m ice-course in a head-to-head race to the bottom. One thing is certain — first one to the bottom wins.
Red Bull Crashed Ice is a combination of hockey, downhill skiing, and snowboardcross, and features four skaters racing head-to-head to the bottom of a 400m urban ice- course that winds its way through and around the famous fortified wall of Old Quebec.
The Course: Starting at La Portes St-Louis and culminating at Place d’Youville, the course will include a series of berms, turns, whoops, jumps and steep chutes, with racers reaching speeds of up to 50 km/hr.
Race Format: Red Bull Crashed Ice will feature 64 racers seeded in a double elimination bracket, with consecutive heats narrowing the field down to a final four.
Prizing: A grand prize of $5,000 will be awarded to the Red Bull Crashed Ice champion, with second, third, and fourth place finishers sharing an additional $5,000.
History: Previous editions of Red Bull Crashed Ice have taken place in Stockholm, Sweden (2000), Klagenfurt, Austria (2001), Duluth, Minnesota, USA (2003, 2004), Moscow, Russia (2004), and Prague, Czech Republic (2005).
