Recap of BMX Provincial Team Camp

February 12, 2007 – The 2007 BMX provincial team met for the first training camp of the year on Sunday under the roof of Abbotsford Indoor. The 16 Athletes were in attendance ranging U16 to Elite. Athletes were introduced to the new high performance coach Richard Wooles and they were very excited about Richard’s Strength and Conditioning background. Leonard “Sarge” Kilgour (cycling BC jr. development coach) and Peter “the Champ” Jensen were on hand to help BC’s Top Athletes. The Training camp had the Athletes working on there bike skills and race strategies. After the 3 hour camp most were tired and ready to go but all were excited about the opportunity they just had. This was the first of many camps and projects to come in 2007.

Look for the BC Provincial team to be ripping it up at the Western Nationals this weekend at the Abbotsford Indoor Track.

I thought the first team BC camp of the year went well. Adam was nice enough to ask me to join in. I was very impressed with how things were run. It was very organized and there is no doubt in my mind that every athlete there learned something useful to them or learned something about them selves by the time the day was over. I had the opportunity to meet Richard Wooles during the camp. Richard is unbelievable. His experience and knowledge of the sport is staggering. I think Richard could be the ticket for bigger and better things for BMX racing not only in British Columbia but all of Canada. Leonard Kilgour was also helping out with the Camp. Leonard has been racing for close to 20 years and has seen a lot in BMX and is very good at teaching athletes how to improve on their bicycles. I have known him for 6 years and I am happy to see him being involved with Cycling BC also.

No other provinces have a program quite like cycling BC does for our BMX riders as far as I know. It’s so exciting that we have these opportunities to ride as a group with proper trainers and try to improve. Hopefully other provinces follow and one day Canada will be a force to be reckoned with on a world level. Overall the camp went great and I can not wait until the next one.
