May 3, 2006 – The Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team will soon be kicking off the “Race to Replace” former cycling star Lance Armstong with a unique event at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway August 12, 2006 during the Indianapolis 500. Proceeds from the race will be donated to the Lance Armstrong Foundation, whose prime concern is the moral suport of the 1.3 million Americans who are diagnosed with cancer each year.

The “Race to Replace” will feature a race wherein cyclists of all levels and ages can test their strength and skills on the speedway while in the company of seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong, as well as participate in a day of activities, family-friendly events, and live music. The winner of the race will join the Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team and race as a member of the Team at the U.S. Pro Championship in September in Greenville, South Carolina.

For anyone who wishes to follow the race as well as the progress of the new Team Discovery Channel recruit, a series of “Webisodes” – exclusive online diaries – will offer an inside look at the team. Twenty Webisodes will premiere beginning May 15, 2006, giving readers a day-in-the-life of cyclists who are in the running to be named Team leader. Among the cyclists in the mix for Team leader are José Azevedo, Tom Danielson, Viatcheslav Ekimov, George Hincapie, Yaroslav Popovych, Chechu Rubiera and Paolo Savoldelli.
