RAAM Day 7 Report

June 18, 2007 – Jure Robic now seems assured of his third RAAM victory, as he has a more than 160km lead on Wolfgang Fasching with some 1,120 kms (2 days) remaining. The victory would make Robic the third three-time RAAM champion. By the time the race finishes in Alantic City New Jersey, Robic and the other competitors will have pedaled 5,040 kms and completed over 3,300 metres of climbing.

Top Canadian in the men’s solo category is Toronto triathlete and adventure racer Peter Oyler in 8th place. Oyler is competing in the race as part of a goal to fundraise $250,000 for the Kids Help Phone. Olyer has also spoken of a desire to stage a Canadian version of the epic endurance race.

Fellow Canuck Larry Optis has moved up to 14th place in the standings though he trails 5th place Richard Vollebregt of Australia for the lead in the rookie category.

Kerry White is the last solo female rider still competing as her nearest competitors have all been eliminated for failing to maintain the needed 10.40 mph minimum speed (after all this is the Race Across America). Amongst those eliminated included Canadian Caroline van den Bulk who was in third at the time.

In the two-person team category defending champions and course record holders Team Body Xchange were forced to drop out with medical problems, moving the Canadian pairing of Team R.A.C.E into second place behind Team IWC Schaffhausen. The Canadian team S.K.R.A.A.M. sits 5th with an average speed some 8km slower than the category leader and 2km behind Team R.A.C.E.
