Defending champ Vincenzo Nibali (Ita) Bahrain-Merida was 5th on the stage and is now 5th overall while Canada’s Michael Woods (Cannondale-Drapac) finished 33rd today and now sits 29th overall.
An early break was chased down by first by Cannondale and then Movistar took over – with 22km to go it was all together. An unfortunate incident with a motorbike parked on the left side of the route occurred with 14km still to complete, when Sunweb’s Wilco Kelderman came to close and clipped it. He went down taking out several riders including Sky’s top guns Mikel Landa and Geraint Thomas along with Adam Yates (Orica-Scott).
Quintana attacked with just under 7km to go to and it was game over. Pinot, Dumoulin and Nibali held on but soon Nibali cracked as Quintana took the win and the race lead.
