August 25, 2008 (les Cedres, QC) – Sunday saw Simon Gagnon-Brassard (EVA-Devinci) win the 160km elite men’s road race, followed by André Tremblay (Apogée-Kuota Élicycle) in second and Charly Vivès (Calyon) in third.
EVA-Devinci had seven cyclists in the race, allowing the team to cover numerous attacks on the flat and fast course. The 160km distance was composed of eight laps on a 20km course an area between Montreal and the Ontario border.
A dozen cyclists made a break on the first lap and a chase group eventually caught them, bringing Gagnon-Brassard to near the front of the pack. Gagnon-Brassard then followed an attack by André Tremblay with the two of them alternating the lead for 25km before Gagnon-Brassard dropped his adversary to win the title.
Among the elite women, it was three out of three for the Cascades Team with Véronique Labonté taking first in Sunday’s 80km road race, followed by team mates Joanie Caron and Catherine Couture. Labonté also won the ITT on Saturday.
In the ITT, it was Labonté ahead of team mate Johanne Cyr in second and Karol-Ann Canuel (Specialized Brault & Martineau) in third. Then on Sunday, they completed the podium with team mate Émilie Ainsley-Perron waiting in fourth place. Canuel’s placing signals she has fully recovered after being struck by a motorist on August 12.
The men’s ITT on Saturday saw David Veilleux (Kelly Benefit Strategies/Medifast) besting Mathieu Toulouse (EVA-Devinci) by 28 seconds over a 21km course avenging his loss to Toulouse in 2007 (read more here). Veilleux then left for Binghamton, NY to compete in Sunday’s Chris Thater Memorial Crit where he finished fourth.
Thanks to EVA-Devinci and Cascades for their press releases to file this report.
