PoolGel Redlands Classic 2005 — Stage 3 Criterium

April 3, 2005 (Redlands, CA.) – Beaver Medical Group Criteriums in downtown Redlands is a crowd favorite because of the wild action that takes place on the 1 mile, 9-turn course. The riders didn’t disappoint yesterday, though the two races were completely different. The international race added two more countries to its list of winners today, bringing the total to five nations with stage wins.

After an early crash in the last turn of the 60 minute women race, they regrouped and two person breakaway formed with a world class sprinter and a world class triathlete. The German sprinter, Ina Yoko Teutenberg of T-Mobile, surprisingly attacked with one lap to go. The former Olympian and holder of 10 German titles won the race with a time of 59:44. The triathlete, Andrea Ratkovic of The Bicycle store was second place, five seconds behind. Third place was the winner of the field Sprint, Tina Pic of the Quark Cycling team. She is a 3-time national criterium champion.

The men’s breakaway meet with a different result in their 90 minute race. After being out a long time, the field chased them down, catching them on the last lap. The Colavita Olive Oil / Sutter Home team was doing much of the work, and in the last 300 meter, were able to pull their rider, Argentinean Juan Haedo to the front for the win, with a time of 1:29:41. Webcor’s Charles Dionne, the 2002 Redlands Classic Criterium winner was second, so close the same time was given to him. Also getting the same time was third place, Brice Jones of Team JPB. He was a member of the failed breakaway but managed to only allow two racers to get past him.

As expected, the Criteriums, didn’t impact the overall leaders. Webcor’s Christine Thorburn (apologies to Christine for the misspelling yesterday) and Health Net’s Chris Wherry stayed in Yellow. The overall event concludes Sunday in Redlands with the Shaver Auto Center Road Race around Sunset Drive. Women leave from downtown at 10 am and ride nine laps on the 6.2 mile course. The men start at 1:30 pm and do 12 laps. Both races return to downtown to finish.
