May 30, 2004 – Mandy Poitras of British Columbia won Canada’s second
medal at the Track World Championships in Melbourne, Australia. The race
was fast and furious from the start with many attacks off the front and
crashes at the rear. Rochelle Gilmore of Australia was carried away on a
stretcher with a potential collarbone injury. It came down to a sprint
finish and Cuban rider Yoanka Gonzalez Perez was the clear winner taking
the sprint by a couple bike lengths. Perez is the first Cuban to ever win a
senior world championship title on the track.

In the 500 meter event, Anna Meares of Australia won Australia’s first
individual gold medal at the Track Worlds today in Melbourne, Australia.
The young 20-year-old celebrated her win by first hugging her sister Kerrie
Meares, who won the bronze medal in this event in Denmark in 2002.
