Plastiglas Ontario Cup #2 – Report

May 16, 2006 – It was raining all over the GTA, but Albion Hills was blessed with 2 days of cool, dry weather leading up to the 2nd event of the Plastiglas Ontario Cup Series. 700 riders came from all over, with mothers turning out in record numbers to cheer on their children, as Mother’s Day wouldn’t be the same without a Plastiglas Ontario Cup event.

The 22 km enduro-style course was designed so passing wouldn’t be an issue with Sport riders doing 1 lap, while the Expert and Elite riders would endure 2 laps of this extra long circuit. This loop showcased most of Albion Hills Conservation Area, the site of the largest 24 hour mountain bike events in North America, and the course conditions were perfect.

The Elite Men’s race was won with an astounding average speed of 22.38 km per hour showing just how fast Ontario’s Mike Garrigan, HB Cycling Club, is and how quick the course conditions were. Andrew Watson, Gears Racing.com/Team RACE, and Derek Zandstra, 3 Rox, both had fabulous rides in 2nd and 3rd respectively. The women’s event had the same top 3 as the first Ontario Cup with Sudbury’s own Amanda Sin, 3 Rox Racing, taking another win over Catherine Vipond, The Urban Athlete/Sport Swap, and Heather Morrissey of 3 Rox Racing. Kaitlin Michener, Arrow Racing, and Michael Mitchnik of The Urban Athlete/Sport Swap both took the win in the Junior Expert Women’s and Men’s divisions.

Special thanks to our title sponsor, Plastiglas Industries, and our host Albion Hills Conservation Area. We would like to thank our other sponsors including Xhilirate Energy Drink, Dukes Cycle, Ecclestone Cycle, Bay Cycle, Gears Bike Shop, Cycle Solutions, Arrow Racing, Outpost Magazine, Pedal Magazine, Squires Race Service, Sugoi, East Side Mario’s, Norco Performance Bikes, Yamaha, Yakima Racks, Kicking Horse Coffee, the Canadian Ski Patrol, and the OCA.

Congratulations to all finishers and we’ll see you at the Canada Cup on June 3-4 that is being hosted by Hardwood Hills www.hardwoodhills.ca .
