April 30, 2013 (Uxbridge, ON) – Almost 600 riders descended on Woodnewton, a private trails system in Uxbridge for an incredible start to the Plastiglas Ontario Cup season. Perfect spring weather, a fast, exciting and well-received course welcomed many rusty riders as the late spring has afforded little mountain biking.
Highlights of the event included the best Expo area ever, with many retailers, Recharge with MILK and other sponsors creating a fantastic vibe. The riding at Woodnewton was perfect, with riders loving the newly added singletrack sections, and fast flowy trails. Riding their way to the podium in the Women’s Elite race were Sue Haviland of Norco/Evolution in third, Cayley Brooks of Trek Canada in second, With Laura Bietola of Real Deal racing taking the win. The Men’s Elite race was dominated by the visiting Quebec contingent, with 3rd place going to Patrick Chartrand of Les Yables, 2nd going to a very fit Mitchell Bailey from Trek Canada, and 1st place being taken by last year’s Under 23 National Champion, Leondra Bouchard of Cyclone D’Alma/Devinci.
Another notable event was a presentation of a beautiful new carbon hardtail Apollo 29er to Allan Hawley, a gift from Chico/Superfly Racing for 20 years of timing Chico Racing events and his stalwart dedication to the sport.
The Ontario Cup series continues Sunday, May 26 with our perennial stop at Mansfield Outdoor Center. Special thanks to all our sponsors and the OCA for helping make the first race of the year a memorable one!
