Paris-Roubaix – Van Petegem in a Tight “Hell”!

April 13, 2003 (Roubaix, France) – Today's “Hell of the North” ended in one of the more tight finishes of late. Belgium's Peter Van Petegem (Lotto-Domo) continued his hot streak after last week's Flanders' win. Wearing the World Cup leader's jersey, Petegem took a three-man sprint in the Roubaix velodrome over Dario Pieri (Saeco) and US Postal stalwart Viatcheslav Ekimov. Finishing just 15 seconds behind was Mark Wauters (Rabobank). Riding a Canadian-made Cervelo bike, Andrea Tafi finished fifth, after a puncture on the cobblestones at the Carrefour de LíArbre made the Italian lose contact with the Van Petegem group. With the win Van Petegem clearly solidifies his World Cup lead with an even 200 points.
