Paris-Roubaix 2013 Report, Full Results, PHOTOS – Cancellara Scores Third Roubaix Victory

by Pasquale Stalteri

April 07, 2013 (Roubaix, France) – Fabian Cancellara (Sui) RadioShack Leopard, the overwhelming favourite, won his third Paris-Roubaix, 254.5km, in a one-on-one match sprint against Sep Vanmarcke (Bel) Team Blanco at the line. Niki Terpstra (Ned) Omega Pharma-Quickstep took the bunch sprint for third.

With approximately 50km to go a four-man break was caught as Cancellara came to the front of the peloton and pushed the pace. Soon after a 12-man break formed but then splintered into three groups but the Swiss rider found himself in the third group chasing.

With 40km to go Cancellara looked like he may be done as he dropped back to his team car. Perhaps he was lulling his rivals into a false stupor as soon after he rejoined his group and mounted a surprise attack. His bluff paid off as he was quickly back in contention.

But with 28km to go, Stijn Vandenbergh (Bel) Omega Pharma-Quick-Step Cycling Team and Vanmarcke made their move with a strong attack and opened up a 35-second advantage on the lead group. The gauntlet had been served and again Cancellara attacked to bridge to the leaders and the only rider able to hold onto his wheel was cyclo-cross star, Zdenek Stybar (Cze) Omega Pharma-Quick Step.

Cancellara and Stybar worked together to catch Vandenbergh and Vanmarcke with 20km to go but the four-man group soon dwindled down two riders about 15km from the finish as both Omega Pharma-Quick Step riders met with bad luck. First Vandenbergh tangled with a fan and went down and then Stybar collided with a fan as well forcing him to lose ground on the leaders.

The stage was then set for a classic showdown between Vanmarcke and Cancellara as the two found themselves alone at the front. In the final km, they each tried to shake the other off but neither was able to lose the other. The cat-and-mouse game began soon after they entered the Roubaix velodrome.

Vanmarcke went high and then attacked launching an extended sprint but Cancellara held him and come around him on the outside at the line to take the win and his third Roubaix title.

Three Canucks were on the start line  – Guillaume Boivin (Cannondale), Hugo Houle (AG2R La Mondiale) and David Veilleux (Team Europcar) – and all did not finish.
