June 14, 2004 – The Canadian Cycling Association is pleased to announce the 13-member team that will represent Canada at the 2004 Paralympic Games, scheduled from Sept. 17-28, 2004 in Athens, Greece.

Led by the tandem of Stephane Cote (attending his third Paralympic Games – 1996 Atlanta, 2000 Sydney) and his pilot Pierre-Olivier Boily and by CP division 3 athlete Jean Quevillon (attending his second Paralympic Games – 2000 Sydney), Canada will set its sights on some medal-winning performances at the upcoming Games in Athens. Quevillon and the duo of Cote/Boily are both currently ranked number one in the International Paralympic Committee Road Rankings and represent Canada’s best hopes for medals at these Games.

Quevillon has a long history of medal winning performances on the road and on the track, going back to the 2001 European Championships, the 2002 IPC World Championships and the 2003 European Championships. Cote and Boily burst onto the international scene last year with a strong showing at the Tour of Belgium, the IBSA World Championships and by taking first place in the road race at the 2003 European Championships.

Brian Cowie is also headed back to the Paralympic Games. He was a member of the Canadian team at the 2000 Paralympic Games in Sydney. He will be joined by his pilot, Murray Solem.

Joining these aforementioned athletes in Athens will be a large group participating in their first ever Paralympic Games. Mark Beggs will participate in the handcycling road events in the HC division B category. Mark Breton will participate in the road and track events in the LC 1 (amputee) category. Paul Jalbert will participate in all of the road events in the CP division 2 category. Shawn Marsolais and her pilot Lisa Sweeney will ride in both the road and track events in the women’s tandem category. Bruce Penner will participate in both the road and track events in the LC 4 (amputee) category.
Also named to the team were Claire Cameron and Steve Rover as additional pilots. These two athletes will be involved in all pre-Games training activities and will attend the Games with the rest of the Canadian delegation.

Stephen Burke will be the Head Coach of the Paralympic cycling team. Chantale Philie will fill the role of Team Manager and Luc Arseneau will fill the role of team mechanic and assistant coach.

We are thrilled to have such a large team attending the Games and to see representation in all disability types and we wish all of our athletes nothing but success in Athens” said acting Director General Brett Stewart.
