PanAm 2015 Track Events Almost Sold Out – Few Seats Left Except at 2 of 8 Events

by John Symon

December 27, 2014 (Milton, ON) – The TO 2015 Panam Games are still more than six months away, but tickets seem to be already almost sold out for the cycling track events. According to Ticketmaster, seats are nearly sold out for six of the eight Pan Am track competitions at the new Milton Velodrome.

On Dec.26, the only two events where many tickets remain is for the July 16 CT001 preliminaries and the July 17 CT003 preliminaries; the other six events are flagged with the label “! NOT MANY LEFT.” It is unclear whether this is an accurate reflection of seat sales to date or perhaps an attempt to encourage sales.

Adult tickets can range from $45 to $75 at the track preliminaries, depending on the category of ticket bought. Tickets for seniors and youths start as low as $25. The 139,070 sq foot (12,920 m2) velodrome has 1,500 permanent seats, “but capacity to expand to host large-scale events” according to Bouygues Building Canada which constructed the facility.

If all eight track events sell out at an average ticket price of $60, this will bring in revenues of some $720,000. Indeed, ticket sales for all events are expected to bring in a grand total of $40 million, something that will help pay for the reported $2.5 billion cost of the Games. Much of this cost is for infrastructure that can be amortized over many years or decades.

TO2015 events take place at some 33 venues in Toronto and in the surrounding area from July 10-26. Cycling events (BMX, mountain bike, road, and track) will take place at four of these venues. Track cycling takes place at what will temporarily be called “the Cisco Milton Velodrome” for the duration of the Games.

BMX events will take place at the Centennial Park Pan Am BMX Centre in Toronto (Etobicoke). Mountain bike (cross-country) MTB (XC) competitions take place at the Hardwood Mountain Bike Park in Oro-Medonte (near Barrie), ON, on July 12 when the women race at 10am and the men at 1pm. The Pan Am road races will start and finish on Lake Shore Blvd. in downtown Toronto near Ontario Place see map.

Adult tickets to watch the mountain bike events cost $40 which is the same for the BMX competitions while senior/youth tickets range from $25 to $70. Tickets for the July 25 road race are also being sold through Ticketmaster for $40 although at other high-level road cycling events admission is typically free for spectators so it’s unclear what access is being offered or restricted.

Again, there is the notation, “NOT MANY LEFT” regarding road race tickets as well.
