Pan American Track Championships Days 4, 5 Report, Photos

July 31, 2009 (Tlaxcala, Mexico) – First, some news about Wednesday night’s session (Day 4) where Canada’s Tara Whitten won gold in the women’s Omnium and Monique Sullivan finished 4th in the sprints barely missing a medal and the podium.

Also that evening in the Sprint quarter finals Travis Smith (Can) advanced to semis and Joe Veloce lost, but came back in the 5 to 8 final where he finished 7th overall. During the same session the Canadian Madison team of Daniele de Franchesi and Mark McDonald finished in 6th place – Day 4 results here.

On Thursday it was the final day for women’s Keirin where Sullivan finished 6th in the 1-6 final. In the men’s Omnium McDonald took 7th place and Whitten added to Canada’s medal count winning the bronze in the women’s Points race. In the Sprint Canada’s Smith advanced to gold medal final where he won the silver medal losing to a Columbian rider in two heats.

Overall in the medal count Canada finished with eight medals, one of its better performances (last year Canada finished 2nd despite having won 6 medals), placing 3rd behind Columbia in first and Cuba in second
