The Canadian women’s team qualified second behind Mexico and in an interview earlier today Gibson told Pedal, “We knew that Mexico and Colombia were strong but we came out and did our own thing. We were confident but not overly – we knew what we needed to do and qualified second, and feel pretty good going into the gold medal round.” Good indeed…
Post race Gibson had this to say, “We went into the final confident that we could do well, but also aware that it was going to be a very tough ride. From the gun it was very tight. Mexico was up on us initally, and then Kristen Sears did a wicked fast 2-1/2 lap pull that brought us back up to them. From there the three of us left (Ariane, Sarah and I) absolutely poured it on. It was an awesome team effort from everyone involved, and getting to stand on the top step of the podium was a great end to the week!”
The men didn’t fare as well missing out on the final as they qualified 5th with Colombia, Mexico and Argentina posting the fastest qualification times. In the final it was Colombia taking gold over Mexico with Argentina besting Chile for the bronze.
In the men’s Sprint Canada’s Guillaume Roussell finished 8th while Jeremie Lacasse was 11th. Kristen Sears was 9th in the women’s Sprint while Ariane Bonhomme was 9th in the Women’s Points Race followed by Sarah Mason in 11th. Unfortunately Mason suffered a broken collarbone following an accident during the Points race.
