Pan Am Championships 2005 Report

April 27, 2005 – Canadians Mandy Poitras (CAN) and Gina Grain (CAN) won silver and bronze, respectively, in the Women’s Scratch Race at the Pan-American Road and Track Championships in Mar del Plata, Argentina on Monday. Cuba’s Yumari Gonzalez (CUB) was first.

Poitras kept the ball rolling with a fourth-place performance in the Women’s Individual Pursuit today.

Canada’s Martin Gilbert (CAN) placed 9th in the Men’s Scratch Race. Angel Colla (ARG) won the gold medal on his home track, the Velodromo Julio Polet. Jose Aravena (CHI) was second and Walter F. Perez (ARG) completed the podium with third. Zach Bell (CAN) finished 13th.

Kristin Armstrong (USA) won the 22.4-kilometre Women’s Individual Road Time Trial on Monday in a time of 31:36.151. She averaged 42.53km/h. Countrywoman Christine Thorburn (USA) powered into second and Columbia’s Ana Madrinan (COL) was third. Top Canadian result came from Amy Moore (CAN), who placed fifth in a time of 35:10.283.

Argentina’s Edgardo Simon (ARG) was victorious in the 44.8-kilometre Men’s Individual Road Time Trial after averaging over 46km/h over a time of 57:49.330. Pedro Nicacio (BRA) cruised into the silver medal position, while Guillermo Brunetta (ARG) picked up the bronze.

In the Under 23 Men’s Individual Road Time Trial, it was Weimar Roldan (COL) who covered the 29.6km fastest in a time of 41:03.15. Jorge Soto (URU) slipped into second place, while Fabricio Ferrari (URU) edged into third. Canada’s Kevin Lacombe was 12th.

In the Men’s Keirin on Tuesday, Barry Forde (BAR) of Barbados snatched top spot, followed by Jose Sochon (GUA) in second and Kevin Belz (USA) third. Canada’ s Matthew Chater (CAN) finished 10th.

The Pan-Am Games’ host country, Argentina, currently leads in the medal standings with two gold and two bronze medals. The United States sits in second place and Columbia in third. Canada is in sixth with its silver and bronze from Poitras and Grain.
