Pan Am 2005 Championships — Day 4 and 5

April 29, 2005 (Mar del Plata, Argentina) – Canada picked up another medal today at the Pan-Am Championships – a silver in the Men’s Team Sprint. The Canadian team is in eighth spot overall with four medals total.

The team of Travis Smith, Cam MacKinnon and Yannick Morin posted a time of 47.488, which put them into second place behind Cuba’s Ahmed Lopez, Julio Herrera and Reiner Cartaya. Kevin Belz, Michael Blatchford and Steven Alfred of the United States finished third.

Another strong Canadian finish, was Mandy Poitras’ sixth place in today’s Women’s 500-metre Time Trial. Lizandra Guerra (CUB) had the best time at 36.897, Nancy Contreras (MEX) was second and Yumari Gonzalez (CUB) finished third.

In yesterday’s Men’s Sprint Finals, Barry Forde (BAR) outdid the rest of the field and took home gold. Two Americans, Kevin Belz (USA) and Michael Blatchford (USA), scooped up silver and bronze, respectively.

Juan Curuchet (ARG) picked up the most points in Thursday’s Men’s 43-kilometre Points Race. Marcos Arriagada (CHI) trailed Curuchet’s 44 points by nine, but he held enough to take second place. John Parra (COL) finished third.

In the Women’s Keirin, it was Angie Gonzalez (VEN) who got a taste of victory. Lizandra Guerra (CUB) took second, while Diana Garcia (COL) grabbed the third podium spot.

Chile’s Marco Arriagada, Gonzalo Miranda, Luis Sepulveda and Enzo Cesario hammered to gold in a time of 4:17:739 in the Men’s Team Pursuit. Argentina finished second with Fernando Antogna, Sebastian Cancio, Cesar Sigura and Edgardo Simon stopping the clock at 4:17.739. Carlos Alzate, José Serpa, Alexander Gonzalez and Carlos Quintero of Colombia pocketed the bronze medal.

Argentina still leads in the overall medal standings with four gold, two silver and two bronze medals. Colombia sits in second with four gold and four bronze medals, while Cuba is in third, with three gold, three silver and three bronze.
