Ontario MTB Cup #2 Mansfield Report and PHOTOS

report by Superfly Racing

May 26, 2014 (Mansfield, ON) – Summer-like conditions, a great atmosphere and just shy of 500 riders made their way to Mansfield for the Scott Ontario Cup Series presented by Plastiglas at Mansfield Outdoor Center this past weekend.

The 2014 version of the Mansfield course still featured the awesome “exit wound” downhill, but also got praise for a faster, flowier 10:00am course.  Course director Sean Ruppel explains; “While many riders love to push the limits of climbing, and technical descents, more and more riders want to get the feeling of speed, flow, and want to wake up rejuvenated come Monday.  The 10:00am course specifically has many of the senior and female Sport divisions, and we want their integration into racing to be a fun one”

The 1:30pm course featured two extra sections, including the “drops” and the “Big Kahuna” – a wall-like climb up some old snowmobile tracks.  As always, Mansfield puts on a good show with a fantastic venue, cabin accommodations and a festival-like atmosphere.

With a Canada Cup race in Quebec on the same weekend, the Ontario Cup results featured a significant if not short-lived changing of the guard.  A big first win in the Elite Men for Kelsey Krushel of Tuf Rack may have been overshadowed by the brothers Winfield.  Tasting the podium in 2nd and 3rd place respectively were Jon and Mark Winfield of Team Bikeland.  The top 9 racers from Ontario Cup #1 were all amiss, and it was great to have some new kids battle it out at the front.  Also tasting victory in her first race as an Elite was Lindsay Webster of Tuf Rack, while Victoria Giangrande from Trek Store C.C. took the second spot.  Rounding out the Elite Women was London’s Melanie Bernier.

In Junior Expert Men Bryan Meyers of Cycle Solutions/Angry Johnny cruised to victory, with 2nd and 3rd belonging to Trevor O’Donnell of CC/Angry Johnny and Owen Flood of Arrow Racing respectively.

The next stop on the Ontario Cup series is June 7/8, with an exciting weekend of riding at Sir Sam’s Ski and Bike, featuring a Saturday eliminator and evening banquet at the chalet that evening.  For information on the weekend, and to reserve tickets for the banquet visit here.
