Ontario Cycling Association Announces 2nd Annual Coach Excellence Symposium

October 17, 2013 – The OCA is excited to host the second ever Coach Excellence Symposium in Cycling to be held on Saturday, November 23 at the Canadian Sport Institute in Toronto featuring Dan Proulx, Head Coach of Canada’s National Mountain Bike Team; Chris Chapman, Canadian Sport Institutes Strength & Conditioning Specialist; Paul Jurbala on Long Term Athlete Development.

Date – Saturday November 23rd, 2013
Place – Canadian Sport Institute, Toronto, ON, 12 Concorde Gate. Toronto, ON, M3C3N7
Time – 9am -5pm
Cost – No Fee – Lunch will be supplied both days.

The OCA is proud to announce a day of learning, which includes the following guest speakers:

Dan Proulx 9am – 11am
Dan Proulx is the Head Coach of Canada’s National Mountain Bike Team and the personal coach of the 2011 UCI Mountain Bike World Champion, Catharine Pendrel. He will be the Head Coach for the Mountain Bike team at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. He has been coaching for over 20 years and is a Level 4 NCCP coach with a Diploma in High Performance Coaching from the National Coaching Institute in Calgary. During his career, he has coached national team athletes in track, road, and mountain bike and athletes under his guidance have won more than 15 national titles. Dan will be talking about the psychological aspects of coaching different athletes.
Dan currently lives in Victoria, BC.

Chris Chapman – 11.20am – 1.20pm
Chris is currently the Canadian Sport Institutes Strength & Conditioning Specialist. Chris works with many of Canada’s best athletes. Chris will be discussing resistance training with a focus on stability on the bike and muscle recruitment.

Lunch 1.20- 2pm

Paul Jurbala – 2pm-4pm
Paul will be discussing Long Term Athlete Development and specific training for targeted LTAD stages. This will be followed a roundtable discussion. Paul is a coach, educator, and professional and volunteer leader with 30 years’ experience in national, provincial and community organizations. He is a member of the Canadian Sport for Life Leadership Team and has led the creation of Cycling’s New NCCP.

Coach spots will be automatically prioritized as follows*

• Coaches that work with OHPSI identified athletes in the OCA  athlete development pathway
• Coaches that have athletes that are considered as Tier 1, 2 and 3 Team Ontario for the 2013/14 season
• Coaches that are working with National Team level athletes
• Coaches identified by the OCA as having potential to work at the National and  International Level
• *Note – Coaches must have reached a minimum of trained status in NCCP for cycling
There are only 40 spaces available for the symposium
