November 19, 2006 – Last weekend, 20 OCA members made the pilgrimage to the 2006 National Cyclo-Cross Championships in Nanaimo, British Columbia. Organised by cyclo-cross master Wendy Simms and Norman Thibault, the Vancouver Island event attracted 161 racers from across the country. Ontario left the Island with 20% of the championship class medals up for grabs. 25% of the OCA riders returned with a medal.
3 Rox Racing’s Kyle Douglas easily won the Espoir field. The 20 year old rider can next be seen organising this weekend’s Albion Thrills Cyclo-Cross in Bolton.
Greg Reain continued his winning ways on Canadian soil by capturing gold in the Elite Men race. The Stevens Racing Team member recently won the Aurora Cross — Canada’s only UCI cyclo-cross race.
Ed Campbell won his second consecutive National Cyclo-Cross Championship in the 50+ class. The St. Catharines Cycling Club member also won last year’s championship at Hardwood Hills.
Craig C. Hawkes (The Cyclery) also equalled his ’06 performance by winning yet another bronze medal. The 2005 Provincial CX Champion previously finished third at last year’s national championship at Hardwood Hills.
Vicki Thomas used her experience at the big US races to earn a bronze medal in the Master 30+ category. The Ride with Rendall racer is a veteran of the Eastern Ontario Cyclo-Cross Series.
On behalf of our membership, the OCA congratulates Kyle, Greg, Ed, Vicki and Craig on their fantastic National Championship performances.
