July 14, 2002 – (Hull, PQ) The OBC Grand Prix has always been a difficult
race to predict. The course, held on the traditional Gatineaux Park
circuit, just north of Ottawa, is comprised of smooth, fast roads and a
hard, long climb.

This year’s race was no exception. The OBC Grand Prix was an Ontario Cup,
so top-class honours for the inter-provincial competition was at stake. In
the men’s race, most of Canada’s best teams were present. There were
representatives from Quebec’s fiercely strong VW/Trek squad; Canada’s only
pro team Sympatico/Jetfuel; and top notch Ontario squads Atlas
Cold/Italpasta and Gears Racing. As usual, the race was a series of
breakaways and chase backs. Ultimately a break with the right mix found its
way through and the last time up the climb Alexander Lavallee (VW/Trek) took
Dom Rollins (Sympatico/Jetfuel) for first.

The Women’s race was run in the Master A’s race. Because of the attrition
factor of the course, and fast pace of the Master’s , the race became a race
within itself. Merril Collins (Cervelo) was the only woman that managed to
stay with the lead Master’s break and was therefore the winner.
All-rounders Anne Samplonius (Trek) and Ann Turrin (Amoroso’s ) finished just
behind in the main group.
