NZCT One Day International Cup – Grain 3rd

release by Cycle Tour New Zealand

March 2, 2009 (Wellington, New Zealand) – Australia continued its dominance of New Zealand’s road cycling summer, with rookie senior rider Chloe Hosking, an 18-year-old from Canberra, outsprinting race favourite and fellow Australian Rochelle Gilmore in a bunch sprint. Canada’s Gina Grain (Can) MB Cycles Team-Australia took the third podium spot.

New Zealand tried to make an impression on the race with Jo Kiesanowski and Rachel Mercer jumping out to a 40s lead at about the 60km mark, but they were hauled in by the Australians.

Hosking said the break from the Kiwis was “a bit worrying, but you had the Australian team and MB Cycles they’re both very strong teams with strong sprinters and they were looking for the win today, so I was lucky enough to capitalise on them chasing”.

Hosking, presented with her prize by Masterton Mayor Garry Daniell with whom who she was billeted with for the week, is in her first year as a senior and will head to the Netherlands in April to race for a Dutch team.
“This is definitely the biggest highlight of my career,” she said.
