Nys Wins Elite Men’s GOLD in Louisville at UCI CX World Championships Full Results – Kabush 24th

by pedalmag.com

February 02, 2013 (Louisville, Kentucky) – The final event of the 2013 UCI CX World Championships saw Sven Nys (Belgium) break away late in the race to triumph in the Elite Men’s competition to take home the fabled rainbow jersey.

The race was held in cold, wet and muddy conditions as Nys and countryman Klaas Vantornout rode away from the field after Francis Mourey (France), who had taken an early lead, faded and was overtaken by the two Belgians.

Nys escaped on the last lap when his teammate made a slight error on a turn allowing the new champ to get away for the victory. Vantornout claimed the silver finishing second while Lars van der Haar (Netherlands) came on strong near the end to finish third and capture the bronze medal.

Geoff Kabush lead the Canadian charge finishing 24th and was followed by Craig Richey in 34th with veteran crosser Mike Garrigan in 37th. Tim Johnson was the top American in 19th.
