April 29, 2010 – The picturesque scenery of Nova Scotia’s south shore has been enjoyed by many informally over the past few decades. Crescent Beach, Petite Riviere, West Dublin, Molega Lake, the Lahave River, Rissers Beach are just a few of the places that come to mind as wonderful spots to view some of the best sights that Mother Nature has to offer.
Announcing the first annual Bridgewater Century Ride, with a route that takes in these locales, plus many other great roads and hills that the Bridgewater Area has to offer, taking place on Saturday, August 21st, 2010.
The course takes in 115 km of great hills, great lake areas, crossing over onto the Lighthouse Route, then taking in Petite Riviere, Rissers Beach, Crescent Beach, before the final assault up Mt. Pleasant, then back onto the Lighthouse Route, finishing at the historic Old Bridge in downtown Bridgewater.
The ride is in the European tradition of the Grand Fondo, taking the cue from the L’etape Tour that occurs every year during the Tour de France where regular amateur riders are able to formally ride one of the stages of the Tour. This ride will be timed, however, our focus is not on the best time, but encouraging people to take part and complete the ride. We hope that many riders will enjoy a return visit year after year to improve upon their previous adventure.
Registration is $99, and there are two early bird discounts if you sign up two people and a bigger discount if you sign up four people. The early bird discount disappears in May.
The cool part? You finish, you get a jersey. That’s included in your registration fee. Plus, you’ll get swag and all sorts of other goodies too — plus minor mechanical, medical, and rest stops on the way. Yeah, it’s a supported Fondo.
PLUS! We will be having a full fledged Bridgewater Farmers Market running all day here AND there will be a Sustainability Festival running concurrently as well.
Live music at the Farmers Market and the Sustainability Festival will be starting while the riders are on course, and there’ll be live music going on well into the evening for the riders when they return. Massage therapists, cool bike vendors, and other goodies are also on tap!
We hope that you will spread the word and join us for the Fondo — we hope to raise the profile of cycling events in Nova Scotia, and also our plan is to work with the provincial government to pave our road shoulder in our area.
