August 3, 2003 (New York, NY) – Navigator's Marty Nothstein took one of his biggest victories on the road scene today in NY when he won the NY Cycling Championships over Saturn's Victor Rapinski. Held in the financial district, the weather left much to be desired, hot and muggy with a storm brewing in the distance which unleashed in all its fury just as the field was crossing the finish line.

The race developed early when a break cleared the field that represented almost all the teams in the 100 kilometer criterium style race. Forming with 80 kilometers in the race, the break was formed after a series of attacks from the 7-UP and Prime Alliance Teams. In the break were Chris Horner and Viktor Rapinski (Saturn), Danny Pate, Alex Candelario, John Peters and David Clinger (Prime Alliance/TIAA Cref) Marty Nothstein, Ciaran Power and Siro Campanogara (Navigators), John Lieswyn (7UP-Maxxis), Tim Larkin and Russel Hamby (Ofoto), Mike Sayers (Health Net), Alvaro Gonzalez de Galdeano and Jose Azevedo (ONCE), Kevin Miller (Jet Fuel), Chris Fisher (Jelly Belly), Antonio Cruz (US Postal Service) and Adham Sbeih.

As the attacks from the break whittled the numbers down to 17, Saturn's Horner scooped the sprinter's competition. Prime Alliance's Danny Pate continued to romp and rip at the break but in the end it was a group arriving in tact to the finish for the final sprint. Despite the attacks in the final laps of the race, Pate managed to contain them all, leaving his teammate Candelario to lead out Clinger. In the final meters, it was Rapinski coming by Clinger, but Nothstein managing to power by the Belarusian rider by a bike length for a very prestigious win.

This was an excellent warm-up for the next stop on the calendar for most of these riders, the US PRO Criterium Championships in Downer's Grove on August 17.
