Nissan UCI World Cup XCM #2 – Report and Full Results

July 8, 2007 (Villabassa/Niederdorf, Italy) — Massimo Debertolis (Ita) from Italy won the Nissan UCI World Cup MTB Marathon #2 ahead of Colombian Julio Caro Silva (Col) and France’s Thomas Dietsch (Fra). Debertolis now leads the Nissan UCI World Cup series after two races. Canada’s Tim Carleton (Can) finished 55th. Switzerland’s Esther Süss (Sui) took the win, beating World Cup leader Pia Sundstedt (Fin) and Dolores Rupp (Sui). Canada’s Marg Fedyna (Can) finished 14th and Charlotte Klein (Can) did not finish. The riders covered over 120 km and included nearly 4000 vertical metres of climbing.

Debertolis completed the challenging race in 4: 49:18 followed by Silva at 2:50, and Dietsch at 3:41 seconds. Marzio Deho (Ita) finished fourth, Lukas Büchli (Sui) was fifth, and local Hannes Pallhuber (Ita) was sixth.

“I dedicate this victory to my mother and my father, who no longer are among us,” Debertolis said at the finish. “At the moment I am in a top shape, and I prepared the Südtirol Dolomiti Superbike very conscientiously. This is a very important victory for me.”

One kilometre before the ascent to Prato Piazza/Plätzwiese (at km 96) Debertolis broke away from a group of five consisting of Dietsch, Deho, Silva, and Pallhuber and began the climb on his own. “I had a precise strategy in mind, and it worked out,” stated the winner. “Hannes Pallhuber and I already attacked on the climb to the Croda Rossa/Rotwand at km 53. However, the group caught up on the flats. The average speed of the winner was 24.8 km/h.

“Last year’s winner, Leonardo Paez (Col), who is injured, sent me text message this morning, telling me it would be my day,” said Silva. “During the race I had a problem with my rear shifting and lost 1.5 minutes. It was very difficult,” Silva stated.

“Today was a really really tough battle,” said Dietsch. “I am really happy with my third place at the Südtirol Dolomiti Superbike. If I consider I was completely out if shape only one month ago, this really is an excellent result. I challenged with Julio for the second place on the climb to Prato Piazza, but I could not keep up with him.”

Women’s Race

The winning women’s time was 5:43:01. Thirty-three-year-old Süss successfully defended last year’s win, finishing 1:34 ahead of over 32-year-old Sundstedt. Rupp finished third, 5:15 back. Fourth place went to Annabella Stropparo (Ita) and fifth went to Blaza Klemncic (Slo).

“During the first two hours it was Stropparo setting the pace,” said Süss. “On the last climb, Pia and I were still together. Then I tried to increase my speed, and it worked out.”

“It’s true, I couldn’t keep up,” affirmed Sundstedt. “Congratulations to Esther for her great victory.”

Both ladies knew the race would be decided on the last climb. “Whoever had more left at that point would be the winner,” the Süss and Sundstedt agreed.

Rupp, the 34-year-old mother from Valens in St.Gallen, spent some time in the lead. “My result is more than I expected. I am not that strong technically, so I was surprised to be in the lead in some downhills and on some singletrack sections,” she said.
