August 27, 2002 (Ottawa, on) – The Canadian Association for the
Advancement for Women and Sport and Physical Activity (CAAWS) and Nike Canada Ltd. are proud to announce the winner of the Girls@Play MVP Grant for May
2002.
CAAWS and Nike are committed to developing opportunities for girls and
women in sport and physical activity. The objective of the
Girls@Play MVP
Grant is to help to make sporting dreams and goals come true and to
Honour the Motivation, Vision and Perseverance of girls and women in sport
and physical activity. Randy Weyersberg, Director of Marketing for Nike
Canada says, “If we can get more girls into the game, and keep them
active and involved throughout their lifetime, then we are proud to be a
part of the Girls@Play program.”
The recipient for the May 2002 Girls@Play Nike CAAWS MVP Grant is Katrina
Pitawanakwat, a 15 year old, wrestler and lacrosse player from the
Wikwemikong Reserve in ontario.
Katrina has demonstrated a level of commitment, desire and perseverance
which Nike and CAAWS are proud to support, coming from a community with
many challenging obstacles, she has managed to keep a positive mental
outlook due to the continued encouragement she receives from her parents.
Katrina puts her heart and her mind into her Wrestling, Lacrosse training,
and her community; she encourages other female athletes to do the same by
sharing her personal learning experiences, inspiring others to continue in
the sport of wrestling. This fall, she plans to train in Southern ontario
for the World Junior Championships in Wrestling, June 2003.
Karin Lofstrom, Acting Executive Director of CAAWS is excited at the
opportunity to reach people nationwide with a community-based program, “We
want every girl and woman in Canada to be healthy and active and we are
proud to be able to support so many aspiring female athletes through the
Girls@Play program.”
