New Women\’s Sport Website – activenow.ca

March 18, 2004 – A new website providing information on women's sport, recreation, and fitness-related activities was launched on March 12, 2004, which is also during International Women's Week.

The website, www.activenow.ca is a membership-based online resource for women seeking sport and physical activity opportunities throughout Greater Vancouver the Lower Mainland.

The name “activenow” is an acronym for Active Network Of Women. Registered members of activenow receive numerous benefits including discounts and special offers at participating retailers and womenís only organizations. Members also have access to the online database that features hundreds of women-only sport, recreation, and fitness-related activities throughout Greater Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. Other features of the site include women-in-sport news section, events calendar, message board, newsletter access, and many links to other womenís sport, fitness, and health sites.

“We are dedicated to providing increased opportunities for women to participate in sport, recreation, and fitness-related activities, regardless of their age or ability,” says Linda Finch, founder of activenow and co-creator of the website. Together with website developer, Eric Lum, they have been working on this project for over three years. The concept for activenow started as a project at U.B.C. and has developed into a passion and lifetime commitment to providing increased opportunities and awareness of sport and recreational activities available to women.

This website was created in part to meet the demands of the ever-rising interest of women in sport and recreation. “Many women would love to take up a new sport or recreational activity but donít know where to begin looking. Hopefully this website will provide this information and more”. She also adds, “activenow is more than just increasing the awareness of the opportunities that already exist. Itís about creating new opportunities and strengthening the community for women in sport and physical activity”. The website currently offers information about local events, but shares information about women's sporting news nationally and globally.
