New Study by Insurance Company in UK Says Cyclists are Better Drivers than Motorists

by Chris Hatton

October 12, 2018 – A new study by an insurance company in the UK shows that cyclists tend to be better drivers than regular motorists reports Forbes Media. The research indicates that cyclists have less than half the number of insurance claims compared to non-cycling drivers which coincides with an earlier study that found that cyclist-drivers tend to have faster reaction times than non-cyclists.

According to Nick Day, of Chris Knott Insurance, which offers lower premiums on cyclist-driver policies because of reduced risks, “A total of 13% of the firm’s insured drivers make at least one claim per year, but this fell to 6% for cyclists insured on the firm’s cyclist-driver policy.”

A study published in Accident Analysis & Prevention last year found that cyclist-drivers could identify general road hazards and detect fellow cyclists much easier when behind the wheel because the “demands of cycling” appear to hone awareness skills according to the study’s author.
