April 23, 2007 – Pedal has learned that the upcoming Tour de Prince Edward Island (PEI) has a major commercial sponsor on board, Scotiabank. Until now, the only sponsors for the event have been various levels of government, media, and Strait Crossing Bridge Limited (the company that operates the Confederation Bridge linking PEI to New Brunswick).
Scotiabank’s logo is now prominently displayed on the event’s website www.tourdepei.com, but an official announcement is not expected until tomorrow.
The UCI-sanctioned Tour de PEI is a five-stage elite women’s tour from June 10-14. The tour will most notably include a 26km time trial on the bridge on Monday, June 11, an event probably unique in the world. The bridge will be closed to the public that day from 9 am to 2 pm.
The Tour de PEI is being organized by Daniel Manibal, the same promoter who is organizing the Montreal-Boston Tour, the Montreal Women’s Cycling World Cup, and Le Tour du Grand Montreal.
