June 22, 2018 (La Baie, QC) – Day Two featured the Para and Junior athletes as 10 road race titles were awarded at the 2018 Global Relay Canadian Road Championships p/b Quebecor on a tough 15km circuit near La Baie.

Cadet rider, Adele Desgagnes (Vélo Club Métropolitain – Quebecor), was crowned the new Junior women’s road champ for the biggest win of her young career with Kaitlyn Rauwerda (NCCH Elite p/b MGCC) taking the silver and Elizabeth Gin (Cycling BC) the bronze.

The final podium was announced amidst controversy as the first rider across the line in the 5-lap, 75.5km race was Simone Boilard (Equipe du Quebec) who had built up a sizeable lead of over seven minutes at the finish. But Boilard’s bike did not pass the gear check inspection and she was disqualified. The UCI mandates the size of gears Junior riders are allowed to use – read Boilard’s explanation here.

The Junior men’s 120 kilometre race was one of attrition as the final selection of eight riders emerged with three laps to go. As the finishline approached and more attacks shed riders, four leaders were left with a lap and a half to go – and then it became a 2-horse race.

TT champ, Ben Katerberg (TaG Cycling Race Team), delivered the final blow to outkick Robin Plamondon (Équipe du Québec) at the line for his second title of the championships, with Alexandre Poirier (Équipe du Québec) taking the final podium spot.

In the Para competitions, Daniel Chalifour and his pilot Jean Michel Lachance (Equipe du Quebec) took their second title in two days in the men’s tandem, while Robbie Weldon and Audrey Lemieux (Macogep Argon 18 Girondins p/b Mazda) did the same for the women.

In Handcycle competition, Holly Dapp (Team Ontario) won the Women’s H1-2, Kara Douville (Team Alberta) the combined Women’s H3-5 and Men’s H1-2 category, and Charles Moreau (Equipe du Quebec) the Men’s H3-5 category.

Marie-Eve Croteau (Equipe du Quebec) took the Women’s T1-2 Tricycle title, while Mike Shetler (Equipe du Quebec) won the Men’s T1-2. The combined Women’s and Men’s C4-5 title was won by Marie-Claude Molnar (Equipe du Quebec).

Road race competition continues on Saturday with the U23 and Elite road race competitions.
