October 26, 2003 – Navigator's Glen Mitchell took home two medals this past weekend from the New Zealand National Road Championships. In the 40km Time Trial event, Mitchell raced to a 3rd place, bronze medal finish, just 46 seconds behind Gordon McCauley (Schroeder Iron), who clocked a 52:29. Heath Blackgrove (Cycling Timaru) was the 2nd place finisher. For McCauley, it was his second win in as many years.
In road racing action, a breakaway of three riders escaped the pack and made their way toward the finish in blistering conditions. With 2 kms. remaining, Heath Blackgrove (Cycling Timaru) out-muscled his two break companions to take the victory, with Mitchell coming in second and Robin Reid (Cuddon) finishing off the medal hunt Mitchell won this event in 1998 and 1999.
