Nature Valley GP — Stage 6 Final Full Results and Canadian Quotes

June 24, 2007 (Stillwater, Minnesota) — Kristin Armstrong (USA) TEAm Lipton and Frank Pipp (USA) Health Net p/b Maxxis won the final Stage 6 at the Nature Valley GP, the Stillwater Criterium famous for its brutal Chilkoot hill climb. Armstrong secured the overall women’s title and Ivan Stevic (Scg) Toyota-United Pro Cycling won the men’s title.

Alex Wrubleski (Colavita-Sutter Home p/b Cooking Light) was the top Canadian woman in 3rd overall while David Veilleux (Can) Jittery Joe’s was the top Canadian man in 19th. We talked with Wrubleski before and after today’s final stage for her pre-race and post-race comments.

Alex Wrubleski (Can) Colavita-Sutter Home p/b Cooking Light – pre-race

Before Stage 6, Kristin Armstrong (TEAm Lipton) was the clearcut overall leader. Wrubleski and Webcor’s Rachel Heal both had the same overall time, 1:42 behind, with Heal apparently in 2nd overall and Wrubleski 3rd due to USA Cycling’s tiebreak rules.

What’s your goal in today’s stage?
AW: The goal is definitely to move into 2nd overall. The race is definitely between me and Rachel, Kristin’s too far ahead so of course, if something happens, this will be my chance. But it’s going be a hard course to get away and gain any time. So my goal is to get some time and just to beat Rachel Heal at the end.

You were 2nd in this stage last year. How about a stage win to really put your stamp on this race?
AW: Yeah, definitely, I remember last year how I just missed winning, I went a little bit later than Sarah (Ulmer, last year’s stage winner) and just kept that same gap. So yeah, I’m gonna try and be the first around the (final) corner cause I don’t think drafting off anyone up the hill makes a difference. Being the first after the final hill will hopefully get me the stage win.

How tough is a stage like today with so many laps up Chilkoot Hill considering you’ve done five stages already?
AW: For me it’s not as bad – I remember last year — but who knows how I’ll feel today? I guess I’ll know on the first lap, but last year I remember thinking it was just such a hard climb. But it was over before you could really feel the pain so that was good. Yesterday you could feel it but I like this stage.

Alex Wrubleski (Can) Colavita/Sutter Home p/b Cooking Light, 4th in stage, 3rd overall, Sport Beans Queen of the Hill, 2nd in Boost Young Rider competition to Webcor’s Mara Abbott – post-race.

What happened when Armstrong and then Abbott attacked?
AW: Kristin went first on the second or third hill and she just had that little extra jump that no one really could go with. It’s all kinda blurry now, Mara didn’t go at the same place as her, she either waited a lap or went just a little later after Kristin. I don’t think anyone was gunning to catch them. It would have been up to me or Webcor to do it. They seemed so far ahead and it just didn’t seem worth it after a bit. It went pretty slow on the flats and it always went pretty hard up the hill and it hurt a lot more than I thought it would.

When you saw Abbott riding away she was riding away with 2nd place overall and the young rider’s jersey – what did you have to do then?
AW: Actually I totally forgot about the Young Rider’s jersey but I thought “ok there goes 2nd, I just want to stay on the podium”, so I just had to basically beat Rachel (Heal of Webcor) up the hill. I wasn’t feeling so hot on the hill so I knew the best way to gain time was in the last couple corners because most riders hit their brakes. I just went as fast as I could through them without any brakes and I had like a 50-metre gap going into that hill and I was hoping I could keep it but Laura (Van Gilder) passed me before the line so I was hoping that I’d held on to the podium spot. (due to a misinterpretation of USA Cycling tiebreak rules everyone thought that Heal had begun the final stage in 2nd, one spot ahead of Wrubleski. But in fact Wrubleski had been in 2nd, so by finishing with the same time as Heal she hung on to 3rd place overall.)

Just how tough is Chilkoot Hill?
AW: Surprisingly I really think you need a good strong core base. I honestly think that Laura Van Gilder can zoom up the hill cuz she’s just so strong and you can use a lot of force with the upper body. I think the core really helps on these power climbs — for me it felt harder than last year.

Third overall for someone so young has to feel good.
AW: Yeah, it’s pretty exciting. It’s good, I’m happy, my team’s happy.

How good is this as training for the Canadian Road Nationals coming up in early July?
AW: Pretty good. I’m pretty sure it’s going to be hilly at Nationals. After some rest I should feel better.
