Nature Valley GP — Stage 5

June 23, 2007 (Mankato, Minnesota) — Kristin Armstrong (USA) TEAm Lipton and Rory Sutherland (Aus) Health Net p/b Maxxis were the victors today at the Stage 5 Mankato Road Race, 137.6km (86 miles). Felicia Gomez (Aaron’s Pro Cycling Team) was the top Canadian woman in 3rd while David Veilleux (Jittery Joe’s ) placed 37th as the top Canuck in the men’s race. We caught up with Canadian rider Alex Wrubleski (Colavita-Sutter Home p/b Cooking Light) prior to today’s race and Felicia Gomez (Aaron’s Pro Cycling Team) after her 3rd place finish today.

Felicia Gomez (Can) Aaron’s Pro Cycling Team – 3rd today

3rd place on the hardest stage of this race is a great showing – how tough were those circuits and what did it take to get a podium spot?
FG: Yes those circuits were tough! The last time up the climb literally I just closed my eyes for the last 200 meters and just kept saying, ‘you just gotta dig so deep, just 30 more seconds,’ that’s what I was telling myself. I opened my eyes for a second to make sure I was still going straight on the road. But other than that I was just going as hard as I could.

Did you move up at all on GC? (we both looked at the GC trying to figure it out.)
FG: I think I moved up probably to the top 5, I don’t know how far the next group was behind me but I’m pretty sure I moved up.
(Note: Gomez moved up from 8th to 5th overall).

Alex Wrubleski (Can) Colavita-Sutter Home p/b Cooking Light pre-race

There’s not too much time between you and a podium spot, what can you do to today to improve your GC position?
AW: I don’t think any break can stay away unless it has all the perfect GC riders, so I think it will come down to the final circuits here (in Mankato) on the last four laps. I think it’ll split up. If it’s not me who does it it’ll be one of the climbers that’s gonna try their hardest to split things up and I think it’ll come down to a really small group at the finish and a chase group.

What do you know about Catherine Cheatley (Cheerwine) and can you drop her on this climb to get the Boost Best Young Rider Jersey?
AW: As far as I know I don’t think she’ll be there on the climb but who knows? She’s riding well and she can surprise everyone. So I think maybe a couple of her teammates can be there but I haven’t seen her there on any significant climb yet this year so I’m not sure.

You were 3rd on this stage last year, you’ve gotta have confidence.
AW: Yeah, and last year I stayed with the main group. I think Kristin (Armstrong) was on her own and then there was a small group of about six just behind her. Yeah, hopefully it’ll go well again this year.

Wrubleski was almost perfect in her predictions. Armstrong won solo for the second year in a row, followed by a select group of five riders including Alex, 0:39 behind. Cheatley finished in the next group, 1:01 down, so Wrubleski took the lead in the Boost Best Young Rider competition by one second. She also holds the Sport Beans Queen of the Hill jersey – which one will she actually wear on Sunday, the final day, at the difficult Stillwater Criterium? To wrap up the 23rd-year-old’s successful day, Wrubleski is now tied with Webcor Builders’ Rachel Heal at 1:42 down on race leader Armstrong – due to tiebreakers Heal is in 2nd overall, Wrubleski in 3rd. Cheatley is right on their heels, 1:43 down. Again, the Stillwater Criterium is NOT your typical crit – it’s a leg-breaker featuring the 50-metre climb up the 18% grade of Chilkoot Hill.
