June 23, 2007 (Minneapolis, Minnesota) — Kirk O’Bee (USA) Health Net p/b Maxxis and Laura Van Gilder (USA) Cheerwine won last night’s Minneapolis Downtown, 60/40 mins (M/W) Criterium. Alex Wrubleski (Colavita-Sutter Home p/b Cooking Light) was the top Canadian woman in 5th while Martin Gilbert (Kelly Benefit Strategies/Medifast) in 20th was the top Canuck in the men’s race.
We caught up with Boost Best Young Rider, David Veilleux(Can) Jittery Joe’s , Leigh Hobson (Cheerwine) who is leading the Canadian charge in 5th place overall and Hobson’s team mate Betina Hold.
David Veilleux (Can) Jittery Joe’s – Boost Best Young Rider
There aren’t many double stage days normally in racing, how was today?
DV: Oh, it’s alright. The TT wasn’t that long and the stages had a lot of time in between so we could take a little nap, just relax. It was good to give the legs a good break.
What do you know about the next couple of stages, how hard they are, and how hard it will be to defend your jersey?
DV: I’ve never done the stages before so I don’t know about how hard they are but I’ve heard they’re pretty hard, so I’ll do my best to just keep to the front and we’ll see how it goes.
Have any of the guys on the team given you clues about the stages, especially Stage 6 in Stillwater?
DV: Yeah, the guys are talking about it, it’s hard, it’s gonna blow things apart, we’ll see how it goes for me.
How are your legs feeling?
DV: Oh, they feel good. I mean I was always at the front today cuz of my spot at the start (Note: Veilleux was called up to the front because he’s in the Best Young Rider jersey) so it wasn’t that hard, it was rolling, it was good.
Leigh Hobson (Can) Cheerwine – 5th on GC – teammate, Laura Van Gilder, won Stage 4
Tell us about how well your team worked today in setting up Laura for the win.
LH: It was a battle with Lipton. It was a very fast race, it was strung out. Lipton was trying to keep it fast, we were trying to keep it fast, and Webcor was also trying to keep it fast. So basically it was whoever could bring their sprinter to the end when it counted. We sort of saved the push for the very end. Laura, of course, always delivers.
How nice is it working for someone who is one of the fastest women in the peloton?
LH: It makes your job very easy and it makes you want to dig as deep as you can because you know if you get her there she can get a win.
Are you surprised with your GC performance so far?
LH: Yeah! It’s kinda funny it just kind of comes by just racing hard each day. You get in a break and it ends up being the one that works, or you have a good day in the TT. I’m just taking it stage by stage.
What are you looking at for the next couple of days which will be tough – do you see yourself holding your GC postion?
LH: I think there are a lot of opportunities for a lot of people. A lot of riders are still close together so definitely I want to hold it if not
move up. A podium is much different than 4th place. (Note: because of time bonuses, Hobson dropped into 5th but the GC is still very close.)
Your team mate Catherine Cheatley is in 2nd overall, she’s been the revelation of the race.
LH: Yeah, she’s definitely still our priority because we think that if the cards are in her hands she can get into the Yellow Jersey again so she’s definitely our first priority. We obviously knew she had it in her, but nobody else knew her!
Betina Hold (Can) Cheerwine
Tell us about the success you guys have had at the Nature Valley Grand Prix, having the leader’s jersey and now winning today’s stage.
BH: It’s been nice to have the leader’s jersey we get to defend it. But it also puts you in a tough position because you have to cover everything, so it puts you on guard constantly. Winning today the crit was good. I came from a non-crit team so these guys have brought me up to speed on crit riding. I think Cheerwine has made me a much better crit rider and I’m gonna thank them for that. The plan was to keep it fast, normally I sit in the back but today it was keep it fast and set up Laura for the win. It’s been a great year with Cheerwine, a lot of diversity, a lot of learning, great learning curve.
