June 21, 2007 (Cannon Falls, Minnesota) — Kirk O’Bee (USA) Health Net p/b Maxxis and Brooke Miller (USA) Team TIBCO have won today’s Stage 2, Cannon Falls Road Race, 96 kms (60 miles). Canada’s Martin Gilbert (Kelly Benefit Strategies/Medifast) was 2nd today in the men’s race while top Canadians in the women’s race were Laura Yoisten (Webcor Builders) in 6th and Alex Wrubleski (Colavita-Sutter Home p/b Cooking Light) in 7th. Wrubleski is the top Canuck in 5th place overall.
Martin Gilbert (Kelly Benefit Strategies/Medifast) pre-race
Martin, this was a good course for you last year when you finished 5th, what’s your game plan for today’s stage?
MG: I think today will be a little bit different than last year. The wind is really low compared to last year. Maybe there will be less selection in the race, but we’ll still need to get in the front if the pack breaks apart or something like that happens because of a crosswind. If not we’ll just try to see what happens in the race and get prepared for the sprint.
Are these circuits good for you? Last year I remember you were up front a lot and pretty aggressive here.
MG: Yeah, yeah, for sure, I like it. It’s a pretty short distance here, 100km, it will be a really fast race just rolling all the time. So yes, I think it could be a really good race for me and the team, and the finishing circuits, I like that as well.
Your team is relatively local being based in Minneapolis, so doing well here would be great for the team.
MG: Yeah, I think all the races here are pretty important for the Kelly Benefit Strategies/Medifast team, so I think we’ll be trying to stay close to the front, so everybody can make the lead group if something happens and get prepared for the sprint.
Martin Gilbert (Kelly Benefit Strategies/Medifast) post race – 2nd place
So it looks like you’re getting your legs back from your long travel day from Beauce?
MG: Yes, it’s getting better for sure. I felt pretty good today all the race, and had some energy. I followed some breaks but not too much and I had pretty good legs for the sprint.
And Kirk O’Bee was just stronger than you in the finale?
MG: The sprint was hard to gauge with this kind of downhill and uphill. I was on (overall leader Ivan) Stevic’s wheel which was pretty good – when you come from behind you have more momentum to climb the hill, so I think it went pretty well. I had good feelings but you never know when to start the sprint, so maybe I made a little bit of a mistake there, I could have gone a little bit earlier, but you never know.
Are you pretty happy with second place in this race against such a strong field?
MG: Yeah, I’m really happy with second place for sure and I’m really happy to see that I have pretty good legs. After Beauce and Philly, I hurt a lot after those races. I’ve been training a lot for the track so getting fit for the road has been hard these last month. But now things are feelings pretty good so I’m happy about this for the future.
Alex Wrubleski (Can) Colavita-Sutter Home pre-race
What happened in yesterday’s crit?
AW: Well, if you’re talking about the two crashes – the first one happened with five laps to go. One of the riders hit a manhole and so her wheel kinda flew out and I went down. Then on the last lap when we were attacking I just followed too closely on one of the rider’s wheels and she didn’t follow the line that I was going on, so…
How are you feeling now?
AW: I’m feeling sore (laughs.) I haven’t had a really good chance to clean it up. Today’s been kind of a rushed day, so hopefully tonight I want to get it all cleaned up good.
Alex Wrubleski (Can) Colavita-Sutter Home post-race – 7th place in stage, moves into 5th on GC, takes over Sport Beans Queen of the Hill competition lead.
How did you feel out there today?
AW: I felt pretty good, I mean, considering all things our team did well and I felt good. I went for the QOMs. Then I did the exact same thing on the finish sprint as last year. If you go too soon into that wind everyone just sits on. The sprinters who go in the last 50 meters or less, like 30 meters, are the riders who are going get on the podium. So I learned my lesson, and now I will know for next year.
And you get to wear the QOM jersey tomorrow.
AW: Yup, yup, that’ll be good, we have that.
Linda Jackson Director, Team TIBCO and Brooke Miller – Stage 2 winner – post-race
What magic are you imparting to your pupil, Brooke Miller?
LJ: Our goal today with Brooke was to go for the sprint jersey, just to get her to practice with sprints. She wasn’t feeling very good for the second last sprint coming across the finish line so I said ‘just save your legs, think about the finish.’ She told me she was feeling terrible, I told here ‘s tart thinking about feeling great, you’re feeling great,’ so she said ‘yes, my legs feel fabulous.’ So I said ‘ok, start being positive, you won this last year you can do it again.’ And I just talked her through it, and at the bottom of the hill, coming up the hill I thought she was in terrible position and I just said ‘fight, fight, fight, fight, fight ‘- she’s a fighter, if anyone can do it Brooke can. She fought her way to that line today.
AS: So Brooke, you just do everything Linda says?
BM: Pretty much! When mama hen tells me to do something, I do it! So as much as I’m dying, she says ‘go,’ I shut off my brain and I go, that’s what I do. She’s a really good director and I just do what my mama hen tells me to do.
