July 19, 2005 – The heat was on Friday, July 15 — when threatening skies gave way to sunshine and temperatures in the 90s and in the elbow-to-elbow race action of Nas-Track Team Racing on the Velodrome at Bloomer Park in Rochester Hills, Michigan. Seven two-man teams took each other on in 1 1/2 of hours of racing that not only produced the evening’s winner but changed the standings in the race for the overall title. Going into the competition, Terry Palmer of Shelby Township held the most points with 125. By the night’s end, Ronnie Sink of Rochester moved up 7 spots to 2nd place with a total of 165pts. Palmer moved down 3 spots to 4th with a total of 161pts . Sink racked up his points with a victory with his Team Neon partner Paul Jaqua, formerly of Detroit, now of Savannah. Jaqua, no stranger to the Friday’s suffocating heat, made the significant move in the race, busting away from the field with six to go and setting up the sprinter – Sink, for the win on the final lap and the double points that went with it. Paul Jaqua now sits atop of the NAS-TRACK 2004 Season Points Standings with 167 pts. Team Neon had to win that last sprint to win the race, with Team Red — Andre Champoux and Taylor Martin and Team White –Rob Akers and Steve Mlujek, tied for first going into the final sprint. With Sink finishing a half lap ahead of them, Champoux and Mlujek had the exciting sprint of the night, racing hip to hip all the way through the 44 degree banking of the final turn, Mlujek trying to power over Champoux and Champoux turning on the afterburners to hold off the challenger. Champoux held on to get second place points with Mlyjek getting third. A Great finish to a Great NAS-TRACK TEAM RACE.
In the Double AA competition, the win of the evening went to young team of Dave Starling of Farmington Hills and Vince DeJong of Hamilton, Ontario. Starling, one of the young juniors being developed at the Velodrome at Bloomer Park, was fresh back from a seventh place finishing the Junior Nationals in Trexlertown, PA. Paired with DeJong, a new rider from Canada, the pair dominated the AA competition to ride away with the victory. Racing continues this Friday, July 22 at the Velodrome at Bloomer Park, the only track of its kind in North America. It is located at the end of John R in Rochester Hills.
