July 5, 2005 – The youngster and the master paired together to be the winning team on Friday Night as the second race of the season for NAS-TRACK Team Racing continues at the Velodome at Bloomer Park in Rochester Hills, USA.. Troy’s 17-year-old Luke Cavendar raced with his coach Cullen Watkins of Royal Oak to best seven other two-man teams in 1 1/2 hours of racing on the 1/8th of a mile wooden oval. Cavendar and Watkins, racing as Team Blue, raced hard all night and were fighting to add to their 26 points when it came to the final sprint of the evening where the points are double. Ahead of them was Team Red of Taylor Martin and Jim Houston , 27 pointes in third, Team Tan of Tony Bruley and Paul Jaqua in second with 32 points and Team Purple, Steve Mlujek and Steve Geerligs with 36 points. As the sprint unfold, Team Purple powered
away from the field and were set up to win when they made a huge technical error and completed their exchange after the bell for the final lap of the race. NAS-TRACK rules do not allow an exchange during the last lap of the bike race. The ruling voided Team Purples triumphant final sprint and rewarded a great final effort by Cavendar whose second place place finish turned into first – and a victory for the night.
The best sprint of the bike race came earlier in the evening at the end of the first 50 lap Madison. Team White’s Rick Denman and Rob Akers set up perfectly for the win with the cagey Denman in for the sprint. At the same time, Taylor Martin set up partner Jim Houston for the perfect throw in, fresh right off an exchange and then the bell. Houston powered up all the way around the 44 degree banking, sat tight on Denman’s wheel
into the third turn, accelerated in the leader’s slipstream to come up and over and pass him by a inch at the finish line. In the AA competition, another junior Dave Starling of Farmington Hills teamed with Wayne Cook of St. Clair Shores to win their night of racing. Both Startling and Cavendar are off to the U.S.A. Cycling’s Junior National Track Championships in Trexlertown, Pennsylvania to be held this weekend.
NAS-TRACK Team Racing continues Friday Night at 7pm, July 8th at the
Velodrome at Bloomer Park.
