September 5, 2003 (Lugano, SUI) – Czech rider Michal Prokop qualified first in the men's World MTB 4x Championships and went on to win the gold medal in the final. He out rode Americans Eric Carter (2nd) and Brian Lopes (3rd). American Brian Schmith surprised everyone when he claimed fourth place after qualifying 44th earlier in the event. Canada's lone 4X rider, Jordie Lunn, after an injury-filled season, qualified 20th and finished 33rd in the final.
