June 29th, 2002 (Mont-Ste-Anne, PQ) – The downhill and 4-cross events at
the Tissot/UCI Mont-Sainte-Anne Mountain Bike World Cup took place on
Saturday, June 29. Both the downhill and the 4-Cross – a new event added to
the 2002 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup calendar this season offered a
spectacular show for the many spectators that lined the course.

Downhill

In the men’s final, Steve Peat (GBR, Orange) had the fastest time
completing the course in 5:09.67. exactly 3.88 seconds faster than his
closer rival, Cedric Gracia (FRA, Volvo-Cannondale). Greg Minnaar (RSA,
Global Racing) took third. The top Canadian, Dustin Adams (Giant) finished
25th and young Quebecer Mathieu Laurin (Balfa) placed 32nd place out of 80
riders.

In the women’s event Anne-Caroline Chausson (FRA, Volvo/Cannondale) won the
gold with a time of 5:54.47 on the Mont-Ste-Anne downhill, one of the most
difficult around the world. Sabrina Jonnier (FRA) was second and Tracy
Moseley (GBR) was third.

4-Cross race

The 4-Cross event which replaced the Dual, has four riders competing at the
same time on the same course, challenged by short turns and many jumps. In
the men’s race, the crowd applauded intensely for Eric Carter (USA,
Mongoose/Hyundai), who won the gold medal beating Michal Prokop (CZE,
Be/One), Brian Lopez (USA, GT) and Wade Bootes (AUS, Trek/Volkswagen) in
the final run. In the women’s event Anne-Caroline Chausson won her second
gold medal of the day defeating Katrina Miller (AUS, Jamis), Sabrina
Jonnier (FRA, Intense) and Lisa Sher (USA) in the final run of the day.
