Morning Glory Club Awards Inaugural Athletic Bursary to 10 Recipients

release by the MGCC

April 18, 2013 (Toronto, ON) – It is with great pride that the MGCC presents the 10 recipients of the 2013 Inaugural Athletic Bursary. These athletes were selected from a highly competitive pool of close to 40 applicants from across Ontario. The innate talent, passion and dedication to their sport, and
positive impact on the cycling community at large were the characteristics that made these 10 recipients worthy to receive the MGCC 2013 Athlete Bursary.

It was truly inspiring to read each and every application, and we are honoured to present the 2013 MGCC Athletic Bursary Recipients:

Honorary MGCC Athletic Bursary Recipients ($1,250 each) of the pool of gifted athletes, two were identified to receive elevated funding

1) Haley Smith
Age: 19
Discipline: Cross and Mountain
What receiving an MGCC Bursary means to me: “One of the biggest determinants of
an athlete’s success is not only having adequate financial resources, but also having
the support of people who believe in your ability to succeed. As the recipient of
an MGCC bursary, I feel as though I have been given both of these keys to success.
This bursary will help me to travel to races such as the European World Cups and
many other events. In addition, I feel buoyed by the MGCC: belief is a powerful tool,
and I feel very grateful that your cycling community has shown belief in me. Thank
you!”

2) Jack Burk
Age: 17
Discipline: Road and Mountain
What receiving an MGCC Bursary means to me: “Thank you very much for helping me
pursue my goals of becoming a world class and Olympic cyclist in my future by reducing
the costs of competing. To me this bursary means that there are ways of getting around
a financial dilemma when pursuing a high level of competition and allowing your performance
and hard work determine your career not your wallet. It is incredibly exhilarating
to know there are cycling teams and clubs out there that want to give back and share
the sport because they enjoy it, not just to make a profit off of it and morning
glory is the perfect example of that.”

3) Kael Deverell
Age: 23
Discipline: Road
What receiving an MGCC Bursary means to me: “It is with profound gratitude that
I accept a bursary from The Morning Glory Cycling Club. This award will help me
both practically, giving me the chance to invest in necessary equipment (a heart-rate
monitor!) that up until now I have borrowed; and logistically, giving me the means
to attend more races this season and gain more exposure to cycling.
It has also given me another gift: the feeling of being supported and encouraged
by my community. All of these elements are crucial to an athlete’s development.
2013 Goal Race: Ontario Provincial Time Trial Championships.

4) Stephen Welsh
Age: 18
Discipline: Road
What receiving an MGCC Bursary means to me: “Receiving this bursary gives me motivation.
It makes me feel like somebody believes in me and provides me with a better opportunity
to succeed in my cycling career. This bursary will allow me to do many other races
that I never thought I’d be able to do or afford and will also help me cover the
cost of equipment where needed.”
2013 Goal Race: U-23 National Road Championships, Lac-Megantic, QC

5) William Simonds
Age: 17
Discipline: Road and Track
What receiving an MGCC Bursary means to me: “This bursary means more to me then
you can imagine! It will help me a great deal this year with my travel for racing
which in some cases would not have been possible without your help. I can not thank
everyone at MGCC enough for your support and I look forward to an amazing season
of racing.”

6) Katlyn Dundas
Age: 19
Discipline: Road and Track
What receiving an MGCC Bursary means to me: “I was very excited to hear that I
was selected for the MGCC Bursary. I feel honoured that I’ve been acknowledged for
my cycling results as well as the volunteer work I’ve done for the community. Receiving
this bursary means that I have the financial stability to race at the first two Canada
Cup races in Quebec.”
2013 Goal Race: Cross-country Mountain Bike National Championships at Hardwood Hills,
Ontario

7) Sarah Mason
Age: 17
Discipline: Road and Track
What receiving an MGCC Bursary means to me: “The MGCC Bursary is a great gift
for my family and I, having two kids in the sport (my brother, who also received
this bursary) is very hard at the international/national level. This bursary will
pay for an entire flight to Los Angeles and back so I can participate in the Jr Pan-Am
Trials, from there I will be able to go to the Jr Pan-Am Championships and hopefully
Track Worlds depending on my performance! This bursary is so exciting because it
takes a lot of financial strain off, thank you so much and I look forward to applying
next year as well!”
2013 Goal Race: Junior Pan-Am Championships

8) Cameron Mason
Age: 15
Discipline: Road and Track
What receiving an MGCC Bursary means to me: “Getting this bursary means that I
will have the opportunity to go train in California for a hard week on the Velodrome
with the Junior National Track Team.”
2013 Goal Race: Tour de la Relève Internationale de Rimouski, a 6 stage race in
Rimouski, Quebec.

9) Jaxon Brennan
Age: 16
Discipline: Road and Mountain
What receiving an MGCC Bursary means to me: “Thank you so much for awarding me
the bursary money. It is greatly appreciated. It is of course always beneficial
to have financial help (I have already spent a fair amount on license and registration
for the Good Friday race, and will be using the rest on a full course of road and
mountain bike races) but encouragement from groups such as Morning Glory keeps me
wanting to continue in this great sport of which I hope to have many years ahead
of me.
I think that your helping young riders in this way is fantastic, it’s always nice
to know that there are people out there helping us to pursue our goals. That is
one thing I really enjoy about bike people, everyone is so helpful and willing to
encourage you along, I have been fortunate to have met so many of them – and look
forward to meeting you at races.”
2013 Goal Race: TBC

10) Colin Campbell
Age: 26
Discipline: Triathlon
What receiving an MGCC Bursary means to me: “Receiving support from MGCC is testament
to hard work, determination and focus, and to creating your own opportunities to
succeed. It is an expression that others believe in me and what I believe I can accomplish
and this confidence is a powerful tool to add to anyone’s tool kit. The support
I receive will help me reach my goals and in doing so lead by example so that others
may set and strive towards their own ambitious goals.”
